What's Happening?

• Re-entry Fellowship Assistance -- Under the direction of Executive Vice Chancellor Gene Lucas, a pilot program has established four postdoctoral/graduate matching fellowships for scientists and engineers who are returning to the academy.
  
  
• Spousal/Partner Employment Assistance -- As a member of the Southern California Higher Education Recruitment Consortium (HERC), UCSB works with local colleges and community colleges to help find employment for faculty members' spouses/partners

• Affordable Housing -- West Campus faculty housing (65 units), North Campus faculty housing (240 units planned), and Willow Springs Apartments (24 units) provides access to affordable housing for eligible UCSB faculty.

• Transportation Alternatives Program (TAP) -- Provides alternative commuting options for UCSB faculty, staff, and students [bicycles, buses (local & long distance), carpool, trains (Amtrak), vanpools]

• Work/Life Office, Online Guide, and Advisory Board -- UCSB has established a Work/Life Office, Coordinator and a campus-wide advisory board. The work/life office has published a resource guide for UCSB faculty and staff on the web. The campus also undertook a work/life survey in Spring 2002.

• Central Funding for Active Service-Modified Duties (ASMD) and Family Leave -- In the aftermath of the UC President's Summit on Faculty Gender Equity, UCSB has centralized funding of ASMD and family leaves for faculty.

• Lactation Accommodation -- UCSB has three existing lactation rooms for breastfeeding mothers and is developing three new lactation rooms with the help of a grant from the Orfalea Family Foundation. Additionally, Medela breast feeding equipment can be purchased at cost through UCSB bookstore; and pumps can be checked out from Office of Work/Life.

• Childcare -- UCSB provides affordable and quality childcare at the West Campus Childcare center and in the new Student Resources Building.

• Salary Equity Studies -- UCSB conducts an annual comparison of the salaries of male, female, and underrepresented minority faculty by discipline to ensure equity
  
  
• Associate Vice Chancellor for Diversity, Equity and Academic Policy -- UCSB has created a high level administrative position to oversee program and policy development and implementation for variety of issues, including diversity and equity.

• Workshops and Support Groups on Parenting and Elder Care -- UCSB offers workshops on parenting and elder care; and an Aging Parents Support Group held in the Women's Center.
