What's Happening?

  • Review of Existing UC Family Friendly Policies  -- A number of existing UC faculty family friendly policies (APM 133-17, 710, 715, 760-25, 27, 28) are available to faculty across all campuses. These policies have not been widely used by faculty at UCLA. However, in the past academic year, there has been an increase in the use of Active Service Modified Duties (ASMD). The following are some areas where change has begun, and in other areas, work is now beginning. Some of these efforts have been as a result of the Gender Equity Climate Study, April 2003, and the Gender Equity Summit (PDF), May 17, 2004.

  • Child Care -- There are three child care centers on the campus for students, staff and faculty (children two months to kindergarten). This provides approximately 240 slots. Referrals for off-campus centers are also provided. The Chancellor has targeted development efforts specific to building additional Child Care facilities. Currently under construction, these facilities will offer 100 new slots.

  • Family Policies Web Site -- Family Policies have been organized together on the Faculty Diversity website and the Academic Personnel website, which is also linked to the UCOP site. This website is being expanded to cover additional faculty family issues such as spousal employment, and will include connections to HERC, the Alumni Association, and Campus Human Resources for Faculty Spousal/Partner Employment.

  • Information Dissemination -- We currently have a brochure that outlines "Stopping the Tenure Clock," which is distributed to junior professors who attend academic personnel workshops. A new brochure outlining UCLA Family Friendly Policies for Faculty and links to additional information on these topics will be available in spring 2005. Beginning in fall 2005, Deans and chairs will receive (as part of their usual annual Academic Personnel Workshops), a comprehensive step-by-step Search Handbook and materials on Family Friendly Policies.
